Forage Blue Spruce in May

Forage Blue Spruce in May

May is just around the corner, like tomorrow, and I noticed that the blue spruce in our front yard had bright green bundles of needles growing on it…new growth! and just the other day I saw a post for spruce syrup, which I regrettably cannot find again. But I did find this post, and it’s basically the same thing, so I’ll be trying it later. You can see the bright green tips if you look closely in the first photo. Second photo shows them close up.

There isn’t a ton of info on the medicinal uses of blue spruce, and if you Pinterest blue spruce, you’ll just get a lot of DoTerra in your face. BUT I search the interwebs in hopes of finding some information. Here is what I found:

  • the tips contain vitamin C and electrolytes

  • blue spruce has been used to fight scurvy, coughs, colds and fatigue

  • it has also been used for inflammation

  • and respiratory problems

  • the pitch is antimicrobial and stimulates the immune response

  • the pitch can also be used on mosquito bites and to help remove slivers

  • The mature needles can be harvested throughout the year (especially in winter) and used to make a tea

  • the tea can be used as a mouthwash to help fight canker sores and gum disease

  • a salve can be made from the pitch to help fight cold sores

  • NEVER use if you are pregnant because it is an abortifacient

Have you ever tried blue spruce? I think it would be super fancy to cut some sprigs and needles for seasoning the Thanksgiving turkey. UM YES!
