Have you heard of a potato tower? This is my first year growing potatoes, or really anything, and I wanted to give the potato tower a try. Why not when you can grow tons of potatoes in a smaller space? Traditionally potatoes are grown in row after row in the fields, and when they are done growing, you dig them up out of the ground to harvest them.
But someone figured out that you can grow potatoes vertically, in yes, the potato tower…and you only have to plant the potatoes ONCE. Yes, one time. Isn’t that crazy?! You plant the potatoes once, cover the plant about 3/4 of the way up, leaving the top leaves exposed and it will continue to grow and produce potatoes! Some people use boxes specifically designed for this and one day I will have one. For now, we are just using tires that we have…and I actually don’t know how we have so many tires on our property.
Make your potato tower
Put your tire on the ground. Place your potatoes throughout the tire and cover with dirt. They will start to grow and look something like this:
This is what my potato plants looked like after just one week!
After the leaves grow over the top of the tire it is time to add the next layer. Just fill in the tire with dirt, leaving the top leaves exposed.
Put the second tire on top of the first and it will look something like this:
It’s been five days since I added the second tire and my potato tower looks like this:
The plants have already reached the top of the second tire!
I’m super excited to see the results this year!
