Natural period relief with essential oils
Things that are taboo to talk about in public: our periods. Things that are totally normal and we should talk about in public: our periods. And the internet says that half of women experience period pain like cramps, bloating, gas, nausea, vomiting, head tension, etc. and I’m over here like…is that it?
You know what kind of pain you experience–and I hope by talking about mine and the things I do to reduce pain on my period help you!
First, essential oils are not a fix-all solution; they are just one part of a whole lifestyle. Secondly, consistent and frequent use is required when using essential oils; it’s not like over-the-counter drugs where you just pop a pill and you’re good for the next 24 hours. When using essential oils for my period I use some of my blends up to five times a day! Use small doses, frequently throughout the day.

What are some of the natural supports you use on your period? What are some natural supports you want to try, but are maybe on the fence about? Like menstrual cups? I'm low-key terrified of using them, but @themountainhoney has a post all about them, why you should use them, and will answer all of your questions. and I learned that laying with your feet in the air is actually good for your health, not just sorta cute for a photo. Usually, people lay and rest their feet on the wall ("legs up on the wall pose") but I mean, here I am...not doing that. It's said to help your circulation and reduce stress and fatigue--which I know I need help with when I'm on my period. This can even help with cramps! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Tonight in our live class I'll be talking about essential oils that I use on my period--so let me know what you need support with during our period in the comments! #lovewildtribe⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #lovewild #livewild #discoveryourhappy #livewildandfree #staywild #staywildmoonchild #wildwomen #bornwild #iwasbornwild #wildandfree ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #livelifehappy #domoreofwhatmakesyouhappy #stressless #periodproblems #happierhealthierhealing
Lifestyle habits for natural period relief
One of my lifestyle solutions is exercise. Regular exercise helps to decrease my period pain and can help to reduce yours too! It increases circulation which is needed for a healthy period. That doesn’t mean go out and do some HIIT, but something like walking, biking, jogging, yoga; like cardio things–which I hate.
the food you eat also plays a huge role in the health of your period. Foods that are high in calcium help to reduce pain while on your period.
speaking of food, you don’t get all the nutrients you need from it, no matter how clean or oganic your diet is–so I supplement with these supplements from doTERRA. Quality supplements have been shown to reduce period pain (source).
smoking and drinking can make your periods worse (source)
drink a ton of water; this helps reduce bloating, aid in digestion, and keep everything running more smoothly while on your period.
try breast massage! I make a balm or oil , and it can help reduce breast tenderness/swelling.
Essential oils for natural period relief
I feel like if I could only choose one oil for supporting my period naturally, it would be Clary Calm. This is our “women’s monthly blend” and I use it every day of the month, not just when I’m on my period, because it helps to balance your mood throughout your cycle. I’ve also noticed when I use this consistently my flow is more healthy and when I do have cramps, they aren’t as painful. And not only does this help support your mood, when you do have cramps you can apply this over your uterus to soothe it!
I also use a blend of juniper berry and black pepper (two drops of each in a tablespoon of carrier oil) and apply to my lower back and over my uterus; this helps my cramps SO much that I can’t imagine being without either of them. I don’t like heat packs on my period because I feel that they’re too hot and it makes me miserable, but the warming effect of black pepper is so soothing and combined with the calming effect of juniper berry…it’s just magic.
Jasmine is great for supporting your mood during your period, especially when you’re prone to feeling sad or anxious during your cycle. It has such a calming, gentle smell, and it reminds me of southern California. I love using both this and Clary Calm in the morning when I’m on my period.
Basil is the oil I use for when I’m feeling so worn down and tired during my period. I apply it to the back of my neck with grapefruit and it’s so energizing! It’s also conveniently good for cramps, painful periods, and head tension related specifically to your cycle.
Cypress is also great for a healthy flow and pain associated with periods.
Grapefruit is great for supporting breast health (you could add it to your breast massage oil)! It also helps to support the uterus and is an uplifting, energizing oil for when you’re feeling low during your cycle.
